Topps Project100 arrives with some new twists for new year

Year Three will have a new lineup and a new approach.

That's Year Three of the Project from Topps -- Project100 this year to be formal about it -- and this year it's going to be "seasonal" with lineups of five artists releasing cards before it moves onto another. It launches at noon tomorrow.

"The collision of baseball cards and art is here to stay," read the formal announcement from the company. "Topps is handing over the creative reigns to 20 world-class artists to create official MLB Topps trading cards. Topps Project100 invites fans to collect a 100-card checklist that will be released on Topps.com across spring, summer, fall and winter seasons (25 cards per season). We've carefully built Project100 to offer collectors our most-focused and premium art project to date. Stunning foil technology will take artwork to new heights, limited quantities will leave fans wanting more and a carefully curated checklist will offer a balanced variety of Baseball's biggest names."

Keep reading for a breakdown of what that means -- and there are other changes, too, including the fact that this one will no longer be print-to-order.

There will be no more than 3,999 copies of any Base Edition card made and only 3,899 of those boxes will be made. Why? Those buying a Deluxe Edition (/100) box will get a base card, too, and those buying an Artist Proof Edition card (/20) will receive both parallel versions inside their boxes. So there will only be 20 APE boxes made and only 80 DE boxes. To narrow that even more, only 15 APE boxes will be sold per card -- the artists receive five of the 20 boxes made for each card.

There will be new packaging to identify what's inside each box this time -- but the cards will be on 130-point stock and sealed in a one-touch just like previous years. There also will be a seasonal catalog made for each -- "an official catalog, featuring a visual checklist, exclusive artist interviews and photography, and everything you need to know about the brand." Topps calls it "a must-have collectible for any Project100 collector. A 1st Edition catalog will be released initially and limited to 100 copies. Once sold out, a standard issue catalog featuring alternate cover art will be released."

In addition to that, there will be art prints. "The official Season One fine art print will be available as a base edition," Topps said, "as well as extremely limited editions signed by each artist and numbered to /10."

Base cards are $20, while Deluxe Edition boxes are $150 and APE boxes are $500. Five-card base bundles are $95. The First Edition catalog is $100 (sold out). Signed 11-by-14 prints are $100.

Project100's first season will include the following creators -- Andre Power, J. Demsky, John Geiger, Malik Roberts and NoPattern.
