USA Baseball & Panini America extend card-licensing deal

USA Baseball is still on Panini America's team.

Both parties revealed on Thursday that a third extension of their licensing deal that launched in 2012 has been signed, giving Panini the exclusive rights to create baseball cards for its stable of teams. That includes the Collegiate, 18U, 15U and 12U National Teams as well as its National Team Development Programs. It will also usher in the first cards for the USA Baseball Women’s National Team.

“For 14 years, Panini America and USA Baseball have collaborated to provide unparalleled early access to cards of the game’s next generation of stars,” said USA Baseball COO David Perkins in a prepared statement. “With today’s announcement, we are pleased to continue our partnership, and now also capture and deliver USA Baseball’s national team players, gold medals and other defining moments for the organization to Panini Instant.”

As mentioned, this new deal also will create a Panini Instant presence for USA players. Those will join the annual USA Baseball factory set and the annual Stars & Stripes product.

“We are excited to extend our partnership with USA Baseball, the evolution of our relationship to incorporate products including Panini Instant to new initiatives including expanding to cover USA Baseball Women’s National Team make this next phase special as we are able to celebrate and incorporate all USA Baseball players,” Panini CEO Mark Warsop said in a prepared statement.

Another new feature part of this deal will be Panini branding on the on-deck circles used at games -- and they will end up making their way into cards -- alongside the jersey patches that have previously been in cards, too. The annual USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award for the best amateur baseball player in the country also will continue to have a card presence leading up to the winner announcement at the College World Series.
