We're about a month into the MLB season and all you have to do to find the surprises for this year is look at the home run leaders list.
Through last night's action, three players have hit 10 home runs and four more are right behind them at nine. One name among those top seven sluggers is a given -- Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout -- but some of the other names might surprise. The leaders? New York Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorious, Seattle Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger and Trout. Just after them? Atlanta Braves shortstop Ozzie Albies, Chicago White Sox DH Matt Davidson and a pair of past All-Stars, Colorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon and Baltimore Orioles third baseman Manny Machado.
Let's take a look at a few of these lesser-known players' cards.
Didi Gregorious is pretty well-known with his spot in The Big Apple as Derek Jeter's replacement, but his production this season has been a surprise and that has likely led some collectors to chase his earlier cardboard that doesn't show him in pinstripes -- or even carry his nickname used because some of his teammates in the past simply couldn't pronounce "Mariekson." (Really.)
His earliest cards can be found in 2011 Bowman Chrome -- one showing him with the Reds and with his full name -- and his first autographs can be found in 2011 Elite Extra Edition. He also has a single autographed card in 2011 Panini Limited. His first Topps autos can be found in 2012 Topps Pro Debut, while his Rookie Cards are in 2013 releases -- and he's got quite a few autos from that year as well. He's got nearly 200 from Bowman Inception, Bowman Sterling, Topps Finest, Panini America's Pastime, Prizm, Pinnacle, Select, Topps Series 2, Topps Chrome, Topps Heritage High Number, Topps Supreme and Triple Threads. His Yankees autos began arriving in 2015 and they might be the most popular over on eBay besides the rare stuff.

Mitch Haniger has far fewer autographs than the other two 10-homer guys this year but that's not because he's had a quicker journey to the majors. He was a first-round draft pick (38th) overall back in 2012 and made his MLB debut in 2016. He still hasn't played a full season, though he was close last year with appearances in 96 games and 410 at-bats with the Mariners. He had 16 homers last season, while hitting .282 so his 10-homer and .309 clip shouldn't be too shocking to those who were paying attention.
His first cards can be had back in a few 2012 products including a Chrome auto appearance in Bowman Draft as well as ink in Leaf Metal Draft, Bowman Sterling, Leaf Valiant, Leaf Ultimate and Elite Extra Edition. Interestingly after that wave, he didn't have a single additional autograph until last year when he was found in 15 brands and with his Rookie Card arrival from Topps and Panini America. There are some cheap options over on eBay if you want to grab something for him.

Ozzie Albies is probably the money guy of this bunch as he's been a heavily watched prospect since his arrival on cardboard in 2015. He's already topped his homer total of last year -- six in 57 games -- and he's never hit this many homers ever as a pro. His glove and his speed were reasons we were watching as prospectors -- he had 30 steals two seasons ago and 29 before that. He also hit .304 for his entire MiLB career, so that bat's not too shabby, either. (eBay prices show people know his potential, too.)
He's got nearly 200 different certified autos so far and he made his ink debut in three 2015 brands -- Bowman, Elite Extra Edition and Panini Contenders. He's been a regular auto appearance in prospecting brands since then, too, especially in 2016 and then 2017 appearances with Donruss, Diamond Kings and Pro Debut. His RCs (and more autos) will be on the way this season.

Matt Davidson's total got a kick-start on Opening Day when he hit three homers and we spotlighted his cardboard then. Not much there has changed. Davidson made his debut way back in 2008 on USA Baseball cards as part of its Youth National Team presence, and he's got four different autographed cards there with a standard (/295) card, a green-ink (/2) a 1/1 patch auto and an In His Own Words inscribed signature card (/20, above). Other prospect autographs for him arrived in 2009 -- in Elite Extra Edition and TRISTAR Prospects Plus -- before his first MLB prospect autos in 2010 Bowman Chrome.
Most of Davidson's 2014 Rookie Cards show him with the White Sox and most of his more than 200 different certified autos are from that year. He's got autographs from that year in Bowman products, Elite, Topps Finest, Immaculate Collection, National Treasures, Prizm, Allen & Ginter, Topps Chrome, Topps Heritage High Number, Tier One, Triple Threads and Turkey Red. You can find plenty of options on eBay.
