There's a first time for everything and tomorrow Willie Mays starts saying "Hey" to collectors opening packs of Panini America baseball cards.
The Hall of Famer debuts in 2023 Panini Three & Two baseball boxes with autographs, memorabilia cards and more as the company formally unveiled that news this week.
“Willie Mays is an absolute icon and we are absolutely thrilled to be working with him to bolster our baseball products,” said Jim Stefano, Panini America’s VP of Product Development, in a prepared release. “Mays is one of those rare transcendent players whose mere presence in our products makes them immeasurably stronger. We can’t wait for fans and collectors to see what we have in store.”
Mays, who appears on thousands of baseball cards made during and after his career, did appear on Donruss/Playoff cards regularly in the past with more than half of his (admittedly low-volume) 700-plus certified autograph cards coming from the company beginning in 2001 and again in 2005 as well as when it was later working without an MLB license. Mays' last certified autos there came in 2008 and he's had autos from other card-makers since that time.
This time around in Three & Two, Mays, who is 92 years old, will have a base card and a Contemporaries insert, autos, memorabilia cards and auto-mem cards, too, as "part of a new multiyear agreement that will see Mays included across all Panini America baseball releases."
Panini America's 2023 baseball lineup, which doesn't have MLBPA licensing, features Hall of Famers and retired greats alongside promising prospects or former prospects who are now getting their first tastes of big-league play. For more info on Three & Two, click here for the First Buzz preview.

Panini used an image of Orlando Cepeda, not Willie Mays on the autograph shown. Massive error for the Three and Two product. It's so clearly not Mays, but Orlando Cepeda.
