Do you like Buzz Breaks? Today's your day then as we launch 12 in 12 -- a series of a dozen breaks of past wax boxes and wax packs in a dozen hours. We'll post one every hour on the hour all day long today ... this is Hour 2.
The pack: 1984 Fleer baseball cello pack
The cost now: $5.50
The cost then: Less than $1
What's inside this one? Keep reading ...
Cards per pack: 30 (28 cards, two stickers)
Base set completion:
28 of 660 (4 percent)
Duplicates: 0
Insert cards: 2
Team stickers (2) – Houston Astros, New York Mets
Autographs/Memorabilia: Not for a few more years.
What's Buzz-worthy: A Johnny Bench on top? Had this one not been blindly bought exactly for ripping right here, it would have started this collector's unopened pack stash. (Cellos and racks with stars on top can carry a premium -- you can find a couple of packs with this Bench card showing on eBay for $9.99 and $17.99.) The results of the pack are below -- Bench was among the few highlights. The real reason to rip these is a fresh, gradable shot at the Don Mattingly Rookie Card -- he wasn't found -- but a Kevin McReynolds RC was (a big deal during the Mets' successful years) and that's about it. More than 10 percent of this set is RCs and there are some notable second-year cards here, but they've been saved for another pack. All in all, this wasn't a bad rip -- the cards are very clean -- but the player crop definitely has seen better days on cardboard.

Why do mid-1980s baseball cello packs generally sell for less money than regular packs, even though they have nearly twice as many cards?
