The Big One has been found.
The 2018 Bowman Shohei Ohtani Superfractor autograph has been pulled from a hobby box of the baseball cards by John Muheim, a business partner at Spectrum Photography in Orangevale, Calif., who is a St. Louis Cardinals fan and a long-time collector.
"I've been collecting since 1999-2000 and have had some good fortune over the years. But this is the whale," Muheim said. "I've opened three jumbos and this was the fourth regular hobby box. ... I plan to grade it and have already talked with Beckett Grading Services. I have lots of ideas after that and definitely have a big decision to make. Selling is of course at the top of the list."
So, where was that box at all this time?
"I had bought this box at HR Sports Cards and Collectibles about a week ago and set it aside since our work was very hectic," Muheim said. "I remembered the box last night and decided to open a few packs. About the eighth pack in, I thought there was an auto but the cards were upside down. When I turned them over to sort through I saw some gold and hoped it was the auto.
"When I saw what it really was I jumped up and yelled 'There is no way!' I was so dumbfounded that I walked around and kept coming back to look at it to believe I had pulled the card almost everyone in the hobby was looking for."
So, what other lucky pulls has he had?
"My last best graded card sale was the Bryce Harper rookie auto from Topps Heritage High," Muheim said. "Only bought one of those online boxes and got it."
